As a new century progresses, English country house style is as popular as ever, and evolving. At the grander, more traditional end is Robert Kime, who has worked on many houses of historical importance, including Clarence House for Prince Charles, and who is a master at creating rooms with that layered, timeless look. Decorators such as David Mlinaric and Hugh Henry also have the understanding of period architecture that is important for a style that often seems a natural choice for an old house.
Contemporary English country house style features less in the way of blousy chintz, sprigged wallpapers and draped tables. Instead there are stripes and suzani cushions, matt emulsion on the walls and exposed furniture legs. Minimalism has left its mark and helped to control the clutter. Rough luxe has encouraged scrubbed floorboards and the stripping of later layers of paint and paper back to mottled sub-strata with the texture of history and use. This is a style that can flex with fashion and fit around lifestyles. It doesn't seem likely to fade away any time soon.

Ashby Manor House in Northamptonshire is a distinguished estate with a fascinating yet chequered 900-year history. Previously transformed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in a grand Edwardian style, it is now enjoying a new lease of life as a much loved home for the latest generation of a family to fall for its charms.
The artist owners of this London house called on interior designer Beata Heuman to create a family home full of fun, distinctive design and punchy colours. A highly original space, unapologetically theatrical and oozing energy. 'The owners are both artists. They have quite wild tastes and they love strong colours,' says Beata. The designer has concealed the television in a red-lacquer cabinet with glazed doors framing maps. The ottoman serves as a coffee table, so the top is upholstered in 'Asphalte' by Métaphores, a double-sided linen/cotton cloth with a rubber coating that makes it wipeable. It also provides storage. 'This style of decoration can look cluttered, so I have put storage everywhere to streamline it,' says Beata. The armchairs are from the owners' old at, reupholstered in cotton denim from I Want Fabric.
The living room of textiles dealer Susan Deliss' French country home is painted a soft blue, this perfectly counter balances her electic mix of patterned fabrics. The red sofa, from George Smith, looks fabulous covered in a vibrant collection of cushions.
So many lamps as well. From floor lamps to table lamps, you can find the style you are looking for at reasonable prices. I love that you can mix and match the lamp with various shades to get a semi-custom look for your home. The orange lamp above is really fun and available in a variety of colors. Having spent time living in New York, Los Angeles and of course, his home country of England, Harry Styles has accumulated an incredible roster of jaw-dropping real estate throughout his career. Today, he appears to be splitting his time between London and his quirky rented home in Los Feliz. But he wasn't born into such a palatial property...
Harry and his family reportedly lived in this humble two-bedroom home in the small village of Holmes Chapel, which was available to rent for $986 (850) per month in 2013. It boasts a ground-floor extension with an open-plan eat-in kitchen and living room, with bi-folding doors that lead out into the small garden.
Originally designed by architect Alejandro Ortiz, the home was built in 1967 and was designed to capture the relaxed lifestyle of Southern California. Today, the new revamp boasts wooden beamed ceilings and modern materials throughout the vast open-plan spaces. The light-filled living room includes floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open out onto a balcony.
Additionally, Harry has access to a 71-foot swimming pool, a fitness centre and a Turkish bath in the complex, as well as a 5,000-square-foot roof terrace and a central courtyard. After investing in New York, Harry headed back to his home country and purchased a second house in north London in 2019, across the road from his first property, for $8.9 million (8m). A year later, he bought a third home in the capital for $4.49 million (4m), right next to the second home he snapped up, though as of yet, we've had no glimpses of the properties. We can't wait to see what he does with his growing London property portfolio.
Heading outside, the small garden has just enough space for a swimming pool, a hot tub and a deck, while high walls and trees provide the ultimate in privacy. While the pair reportedly moved on to a single-storey home in the LA suburb of Los Feliz, the property was the ideal spot to lay low at the start of their relationship.

The trick to nailing a contemporary minimal garden is to focus on foliage and texture, rather than masses of striking flowers. Plants are positioned to compliment and echo the architectural features of the home, rather than be the hero in their own right. This contemporary Sydney garden features a mix of bamboo, buxus plantings and a trio of potted succulents. Champions of this style include Garden Life's Richard Unsworth and landscape designer Kate Seddon.
It's no secret that the Australian climate lends itself to Hamptons decorating style in the home, but often forgotten is the potential to extend this breezy coastal style into the outdoors. Part coastal, part formal, part luxury resort, a Hamptons style garden layers structured plantings with feature trees, lush lawns and well-manicured hedges to create a truly liveable garden style to suit any sized space.
Courtyard gardens treat the outdoors as an extension of the home. This coastal outdoor bathroom is a great example of how to create an inviting spa-like environment with large-scale feature pots and trailing plants surrounding a luxurious bathing zone, perfect for enjoying a cool summer's breeze while reading a book.
There are five key elements of formal gardens, two of which are: classic plant choices and water features. Modern Australian formal gardens have begun to veer away from exotic plants for native choices that require less water. Champions of this style are Paul Bangay and Peter Fudge.
If your home is styled to perfection but it seems like something's missing, then an indoor plant could be the magic solution. Indoor greenery is now the norm in modern homes. That's because plants purify the air and look fantastic too! Looking for a fool-proof indoor plant to get started? Try one from our list of 15 plants that thrive indoors.
Creating an organic garden is perhaps more of a commitment than a true garden style. But it's a movement that is rapidly influencing gardens all over the country. An organic gardener makes a commitment to fight problems such as pests, weeds and disease with natural solutions. This results in healthier fruits and vegetables, has a positive impact on the environment and will keep bees, birds and good insects happy. A great place to start is by establishing a compost and using natural pest control methods.
With a renewed interest in mid-century modern design has come a resurgence of Palm Springs inspired gardens. Creating garden beds that echo the angular architecture of the building is paramount. Just as a cottage needs a garden wild with flowers and rambling roses, so too does a mid-century modern home require sparse, structural plantings that are drought tolerant. That's because Palm Springs - where this style originates - is in the middle of the Sonoran Desert in south California. Cacti and succulents, particularly mother-in-law's-tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) are popular choices for this style of garden.
Woodland gardens take years to create from scratch, as the essential ingredient is a canopy of leaves provided by tall deciduous trees. In this cool-climate garden in the Blue Mountains exotic oaks have been underplanted with daffodils and lilacs which thrive in the dappled light. Legendary landscape designer Edna Walling was one of the pioneers of this style in Australia.
This hearty main dish calls for hearty side dishes! I love to serve country-style ribs with these sides: loaded potato salad, or Mashed potatoes and country-style gravy, baked beans, Pasta Salad, fruit salad, corn-on-the-cob, or thick slices of homemade bread spread with garlic butter garlic, and salt. And a cold glass of lemonade and homemade Chocolate cake make this an unforgettable feast!
